One of the first steps to getting started with my raised bed garden is to map out how I plan to arrange the different plants. This is a rough sketch to scale of the different vegetables I might grow this season and how they will fit best into my raised beds. I have a feeling that I'm going to end up changing this a bunch over the next 6-8 weeks, but this is a great first step to get me started. I'll be doing a technique called succession planting, which means that certain parts of the garden will change as we move through the season. So for example, since the tomatoes can't go in the ground until May 1st, and even that date is depending on if we get a late frost, I will probably plant some cold weather lettuces and spring peas in those areas, given that they can be harvested around the time that the tomatoes will need to go in the ground. I can also plant some of these vegetables directly in the soil once the snow melts and soil thaws a bit. That means I'll have room to grow some vegetables directly in the soil and the rest I can start inside.
