Personal Growth

This is a photo of my backyard, thanks to the snowy February we've been having here in New York. So while I wait for the ground to thaw, I thought I'd use this post to share the other component to Rebecca Grows A Garden, keeping track of my personal growth goals:

- committing to a task

- learning to accept failure

- finding creativity and value in myself outside my art

I'll be checking in each week regarding these personal growth goals, although some might not be relevant to the tasks of the week, these are goals that I hope to achieve growth in personally through this project. Here's a little more insight into each of the personal growth goals:

committing to a task: I'm sure I'm not alone when I confess that often times I only commit to tasks I am confident I will complete well. I’ve always been hesitant about growing plants from seed because I am not confident I can do it. This will be a good exercise in committing and seeing something through without a clear path to success!

Learning to accept failure: this goes hand in hand with the committing to a task part. Sometimes things don’t work out, and just because I am afraid of that failure doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try it! That being said, maybe next time I’ll try baking... I also don’t bake because I usually fail at it miserably.

Finding creativity and value in myself outside of my art: this has been a hard one for me to work on in life, but especially during COVID times. I find myself often talking to my students about this idea when working on getting through writers block. For me, cooking has always been a creative release, a quick way to find value outside of the music I make. However, COVID has taken away some of the joy and release I've found in cooking because I am now doing it ALL THE TIME. I'm honestly "burnt" on cooking. So I feel this is an opportunity to take my own advice and be creative outside of making music. My value as a person is so directly related to the music I make and the music I write. So I feel that growing something will help me find even more value in myself.
