Welcome to Rebecca Grows A Garden!

Join me on my journey to grow vegetables in my garden from seed! I've always been that person that buys vegetables from Home Depot. I try to find interesting varieties, but there are definitely only the usual options, like big boy tomatoes, generic basil, no heirloom varieties, and not many organic options.

I'm a full time musician, songwriter, and educator. I've spent the past 15 years traveling the world playing my music and other people's music. I have also been a professor at Purchase College Conservatory of Music, sharing my knowledge and experience of songwriting and touring with my students. Somewhere in between all of that I've tried to grow a garden. Most of the time it's been tomatoes and herbs in a variety of containers. When I moved into my first apartment fresh out of college and hadn't quite built up my touring career, I was able to grow a few more things in the ground in the perimeter of my patio, like cucumbers, strawberries and even eggplant.

This past year has been a big change for my husband and I. We've been stuck at home, teaching online, with barely any performances and definitely no touring work. I also decided to make lemonade out of these pretty sour lemons and pursue a masters degree. When everything went remote back in March of 2020, the first thing I did was order three raised beds for our backyard and 14 bags of organic raised bed mix. I was able to purchase plants from Home Depot, and success! We had tomatoes from June through October.

So, that brings us to February 2021 and my most recent venture: to grow ALL of the vegetables for my raised beds from seed. This is something I've never done before, and have always been apprehensive about doing. In the past I've killed almost every house plant I've owned (I have much better success with outdoor plants that someone else has started). I have quite a long list of vegetables I'd like to grow, maybe even some watermelons. I'll be focusing on heirloom varieties, and I'll be posting weekly updates with my plans and progress, as well as recipes using the vegetables from the garden.

Thanks again for following along, and wish me luck!
